MARC WEISBLOTT OF THA WEISBLOGG introduces this site on his blog with a bit of criticism (my "parochial tone" as your compere) and a quick shot at David Miller's apparent embrace by the post-ironists at crypto-salon Trampoline Hall.

(Marc abjures permalinks, so you'll have to scroll down as the post ages. Don't worry - all of Marc's fans are used to it.)

Also, as promised, you'll find below the first of Marc's week-long profile series on Toronto's fringe mayoral candidates, a Last Chance City exclusive. Enjoy.

ON THE FRINGE, PART ONE

DON ANDREWS: "SCRAP THE GUN REGISTRY AND THE PHONY WAR ON TERROR AND GIVE US BACK OUR CIVIL RIGHTS! FREEDOM FOR CHECHNYA! STOP THE WAR ON IRAQ!" Oh, and did he mention European Heritage Week. (Which seems to have not been celebrated since 2001--maybe it's operating on an intermittent schedule that nobody can decipher, sorta like the Goodwill Games.) Did he mention the motion to twin the City of Toronto with the city of Jokhar? (Why should the Falun Gong have all the sympathetic fun?) How about the by-law he wants to introduce to have English translations on all commercial signs in Toronto? But the Miller Highway Robbery website ain't got nuthin' on Andrews's fellow Nationalist Party of Canada candidate Bob Smith, whose attack on current Ward 31 councillor Michael Tziretas for letting the dreariest backalleys in the east end become the city's graffiti tag haven features some genuinely amusing photoshop worthy of FARK. (Scroll down halfwayish here.)

GARY BENNER: Running on a platform that includes an annual Waterfront Week: "We celebrate Gay Pride, Caribbean Culture, Greek Culture etc. every year but do nothing to celebrate our nautical heritage and the fantastic recreational opportunities Lake Ontario provides to us. The event will focus the entire City on the waterfront and the benefits of keeping the lake pollution free. It will be a real attraction for tourists." Benner will show you a fantasy subway map (scroll halfway down) and makes a point that City Hall doesn't need lobbyists any more than it would need an ethics or integrity commissioner - although, presumably, you can't not have one without not having the other. Based on Gary's photo gallery, if he's looking for freebies just for showing his face, at least they're the modest kind that I can relate to:

...coffee...

...pizza and...

...dry cleaning.

JAMIE CASTILLO: Not sure what this is about, beyond a banner referring to "The First Multicultural Direct Elections" ... and a rather warped sense of time and space. "Your community, should have at least one ward candidate per each Government, it is best you choose the Candidate for MPP as well, Our Provincial Elections is right after our Municipal Elections and do not forget your Candidate for MP." There's a link to a purported video to Castillo, but it only takes you to the premium RealPlayer download page, maybe you're supposed to view the trailer for the DVD release of Alien and be somehow satisfied with that?

FELLOW PAPIST KATHY SHAIDLE OF RELAPSED CATHOLIC joins the fray with a short post (I hope it's not her last word) on her choice for mayor:

I attended a Tory women's-only fundraiser last week, and while he was a little too "multi-culti" for my tastes, I think he will do something about homelessness (if the Poverty Professionals let him) and the mess we call downtown.

ANGUA, OF ANGUA'S FIRST BLOG, apparently discovered this site, but didn't recieve the e-mail invitation to join. Nevertheless, Angua, consider yourself joined, thanks to this rather nice summation of the agonies that most voters, no doubt, are suffering right now:

Like with, well, practically anything, I am divided on the issues of this election. And this one is much more likely to affect appartment-renting, transit-riding, restaurant-going, tax-paying me, than almost anything done federally or provincially. Easy enough to know whom not to vote for. But what if you disagree with the guy you'd like to vote for on the one issue that seems the centerpiece of his campaign, hmm?

Hopefully, Angua will let us know the identity of this "mystery candidate" (Any guesses - Miller, perhaps?) in a future post.
